Every year, almost as many cubic meters of concrete are used worldwide as there are people on the planet. It is by far the most widely used material, in particular to construct all kinds of buildings and infrastructures.

In a world where sustainable development has become an unavoidable subject, where the increase in world population and the consequences of climate change constitute enormous challenges for future generations, engineers and civil engineering researchers have a duty and responsibility to ensure the durability and safety of all of these constructions.


Having a good control of these different aspects requires both a good command of the design of the structures, the manufacture of the materials and an in-depth knowledge of the way in which the materials and the structures react in the event of mechanical or chemical attacks. In all cases, these “attacks” result in more or less intense cracking, which themselves become the vector of environmental attacks (by water or certain corrosive products).
