Strength of Materials
Discussion in this book is confined to structures • that are isotropic (i.e. material properties at any point same in all directions) and homogeneous (i.e. material properties same at all points of the structure);
- that are statically loaded such that displacements and rotations are small (see Sect. 1.3);
- That exhibit linear elastic behaviour (i.e. the loading is such that the internal stresses are within the elastic limit and the structure regains its original shape and size after unloading; further, a linear constitutive law is applicable—see Sect. 1.6).
